The 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa as the first football world cup in Africa creates a wonderful opportunity at a time where the world’s attention will be focused on Africa, for Africans to be telling Africa’s story on a global stage. That is what the Twenty Ten initiative is all about.
Twenty Ten: African Media on the Road to 2010 (and beyond) is an initiative of World Press Photo, Free Voice, Africa Media Online and lokaalmondiaal. This project is made possible by the financial support from the Dutch Postcode Lottery. World Press Photo and Free Voice receive support from the Dutch Postcode Lottery.

108 professional journalists from 34 countries around Africa have been selected to participate in the initiative which sees them come under the tutelage of leading media practitioners from around the world. Hundreds of in depth features will be produced on the run up to and during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The stories will be made available for sale to African and world-wide publishing and broadcast markets. While soccer offers the moment in time for the project to happen, the productions do not focus primarily on what will be happening on the pitch in the stadia, rather it is the story of the impact of the game on African society and African society’s impact on the game. As the first African World Cup, 2010 is truly an Africa wide story, which is why we are mobilising the most significant African media force to cover this moment in time in Africa from an African perspective.
